Engineering Expertise behind every Pontoon

Engineering Expertise Behind Every Pontoon: A Q&A with Paul Russell, Project Manager
With six years at Gael Force and a career built on hands-on engineering experience at sea, Paul Russell understands exactly what makes a marine project succeed. As a Project Manager working closely with customers and the in-house design team, his insight highlights the depth of expertise behind every pontoon installation.
We sat down with Paul to discuss what truly sets Gael Force apart.
What distinguishes Gael Force as a supplier of pontoons?
“The strength and depth of our specialist in-house design and engineering team, working closely together with the Project Management team, is what makes the difference.
Everyone is aligned to produce the highest quality product, one that exceeds the customer’s expectations.”

What are the most critical considerations when supporting customers with pontoon design?
"Consideration is always given to safety, functionality, and user friendliness.
From there, the technical detail begins. Key factors include:
- Whether disability access or hoist systems are required, impacting gangway incline, ramp sizing and handrail configuration
- Whether the facility is for commercial use, leisure use, or a combination of both

- The number, size, tonnage and draft of vessels expected, determining berthing layout and freeboard requirements
- Mooring systems, chain moorings or piles and pile guides, particularly when running against a harbour wall
- Regulatory requirements, harbour authority considerations, environmental conditions and aesthetics
- Required services such as water, fuel, power, waste discharge or navigational lighting
Using the information gained, we would then design and configure to any size and shape depending on the customer's specifications or requirements and discuss further to work closely with the client to ensure all was captured to meet their budgetary requirements.”
From an engineering perspective, what stands out in Gael Force pontoons?
“Quality, quality, quality.
For me as an engineer, that’s the number one standout. If it looks right, invariably it will be right.
The hard work will have been done by the design team to check all factors and ensure the product is engineered not only to meet, but also to exceed, the challenging conditions it is required for.”
